during EPA's National Bed Bug Summit |
April 14,
2009, Toms River, New Jersey: Action
Termite and Pest Control is pleased to have
participated in the EPA's National Summit on Bed
Bugs which took place on April 14, 2009 in
Washington, D.C. On a very wet and windy day in
the nation's capital hundreds of stake holders
from the bed bug eradication industry gathered
to discuss the increasing problems associated
with bed bugs.
"This was a
historic summit that brought together a wide
array of industry experts to find a way to stop
the increasing infestations of the notorious bed
bug" commented John Russell, General Manager,
Action Termite and Pest Control. "Action was
honored to provide a unique perspective of how
bed bug dog detection teams and the proper bed
bug control methods were the most effective
means of eliminating bed bug infestations. We
feel we are a head of the curve and can offer
significant relief to our customers."
The EPA which
hosted the event reached out to industry leaders
and for public comment as to the best ways to
educate the public, train the industry, assess
responsibility (tenant vs management) and
discuss the proper methods of eradication as
they search for a national bed bug policy. |
Part of the panel of
industry expert was New Jersey's own Assemblywoman Joan
M. Quigley, who was there to share her considerable
expertise in passing through the NJ Assembly - A3202.
This bill which is a first of its kind in the nation and
shall be a roadmap for the nation is the most
comprehensive piece of bed bug legislation in US.
Clearly defining the responsibilities of both tenant and
property owner/management company, A3202 is intended to
help all involved have a clear roadmap as to how to
proceed when bed bugs are present.
|
"They (bed bugs)
are a modern scourge," commented Assemblywoman
Joan M. Quigley.
As evident by the
incredible turn out and the comments of the
leading experts which included Trade
Associations, Entomologists, Government
Agencies, Property Management Companies, Pest
Control Companies, and Housing Authorities, bed
bug infestations have seen an incredible rise.
This pest which does not discriminate based on
economics is effecting may dwellings including:
hotels, motels, nursing homes and care
facilities as well as hospitals, Veterans
Administration Facilities, retail shops, moving
companies, etc. |

On
February 5, 2009, the New Jersey Assembly passed A-3203 which
makes the New Jersey landlords wholly responsible for
eliminating bed bugs from rented accomodations.
"This bill is vital to the control of the bed bugs" commented
John Russell, General Manager. "Proactively attacking the
infestation problem is vital, in the past, there has been
considerable confusion as to where the responsibility resides,
with the landlord or the tenant. We have seen both landlords
and tenants call our office with this type of confusion, which
many times would lead to a delay or non-treatment. This is an
important roadmap for the property management industry and
Action is determined to provide the most cost effective
solution."
Action's customers utilize our bed bug dog
detection teams to rid their home
or business of these nasty pests. With over 800 hours of
training by the Florida Canine Academy, our bed bug dog teams
are a cost effective way to clean your environment. In
the past, chemical applications had to be made throughout a
given hotel, nursing home or furniture store, now with the
Action Bed Bug Dog teams we are able to target treatments to the
infestation area or rooms. The savings a multiple room
establishment or large complex yields by doing a sweep with the
Action's Bed Bug Dog is considerable and the dogs are over 90%
accurate.
"Bed bug's are a big problem" continued John
Russell. "Nevertheless, Action's Bed Bug Dog Detection teams
